SPCA East London

We prevent cruelty, promote kindness, and alleviate the suffering of animals. Our objective, aligned with the National SPCA, is to serve and protect ALL animals, to uplift their welfare, and to ensure that the protection they have under South African law is upheld and respected. Our focus is on all animals and their well-being.   No matter the breed, condition, age, or reason for animals being brought to the EL SPCA, we serve day and night.   No animal is turned away.  We are on call and permanently available to respond to rescues and emergencies involving animals.

One or two of your current projects :

Shelter for Abandoned, Abused & Stray Animals

Animal Inspectors and Field Officers that respond to reports of stray animals, collection of these animals as well as home checks where reports of abuse and neglect may be involved.

Care of removed, abused, and neglected animals, domestic and livestock.

Subsidized Medical treatment for animals with illnesses or extreme abuse. Euthanasia of animals with extreme disease or illness.

Our facilities include kennels, catteries, and a farmyard. We also have an efficiently run veterinary clinic & surgery on site.

And an after pic! This is what makes it all so worth it!

Pet Adoption Services :

We hope to reunite pets with owners wherever possible, should the animals have strayed from home.   Where this is not possible, we have an ongoing public campaign to promote the adoption of abandoned and neglected animals.   We encourage the public to consider adopting pets from the SPCA before purchasing animals that are bred for sale.   Families and individuals wanting to adopt pets are subjected to home checks to ensure that the environment that the adopted animal will be going to is safe and caring.

All adopted pets are sterilized before going home with their new owners, which is mandatory, along with de-worming and vaccinations.    Pets are also now micro-chipped.   We are proud to have facilitated many successful adoptions.

OUR WISH LIST :

Asset Maintenance / Replacement and Security

  • Ride-on lawnmower – given the size of our grounds we are currently having to outsource grass cutting and this is an expense we can ill afford.
  • Electric chainsaw – the property and boundary has become overgrown with dense vegetation and old trees which are causing damage to the boundary wall as well as posing a real security risk for staff, animals, and assets – requests for assistance from BCMM’s vegetation control have not been heeded.
  • 150M Razor wire – the sanctuary has been experiencing a spate of trespassing as well as theft of animals and property.
  • Repairs/replacement of cold room which is used as a morgue for deceased animals.
  • Chest deep freezer 570L

 Animal Health

  • 20M hosepipes x 5 for hosing down kennels, catteries, and livestock quarters.
  • Chlorine dispenser x 8 – the sanctuary makes use of chlorine to clean the kennels as this also helps prevent and curb the spread of various animal diseases like kennel cough which spread like wildfire through the kennels.

      Catteries and Kennels

  • Plastic cat box x 10 (for cats to sleep in)
  • Cat carriers x 4
  • 15 x wooden doors for catteries – the current doors have rotted with age and wear and tear.
  • Plastic dog beds (Large & medium); blankets, bowls, balls, and cat litter boxes
  • 3 x wheelbarrows – used to transport food to kennels.
  • 5 x watering cans to top up water bowls in catteries and kennels.
  • Paint for kennels & catteries.

         Staff Uniform

  • 30 x Navy T-shirts for staff – SPCA and donor branded.
  • 15 x 2-piece navy overalls

 Financial Wellbeing and Sustainability

  • Coin Sorter to speed up the counting of the blue SPCA coin tins. Said tins form the backbone of the EL SPCA revenue stream.  Currently, the SPCA does not have a coin sorter and so all coin sorting is done manually.
  • Assistance to settle the current Vetserve account which is currently almost R300 000. We have had an influx of animals since the Covid outbreak and its devastating socio-economic impact.  Many animals continue to be surrendered or abandoned.  In addition to this many more people are requesting to make use of the veterinary alimony scheme which caters to indigents and the unemployed.

The EL SPCA never turns any animal away.
