Sivenathi Special Care Centre

Sivenathi Special Care Centre facility operates from the Fort Beaufort  Golf Course in Raymond Mhlaba, Eastern Cape. The purpose is to provide a safe and caring environment for severely and profoundly intellectually disabled children.

Most of the children currently in our care were found in a serious state of neglect. Others were abandoned by their biological parents and were left at our facility, their parent’s whereabouts are unknown. Deserted by their parents due to their condition of health, their social welfare allowances are often mismanaged by their relatives. The children who come to us are often also victims of abuse by family members. Our facility caters for a total of 36 children with severe disabilities.

How the pandemic has affected the organization:

  1. No intersectoral collaboration due to lockdown
  2. No running water system. Washing hands and clothes is a huge challenge
  3. No transportation from the Centre to our local clinic and hospital. Sometimes children are carried on the backs of caregivers with fewer towels i.e. violating the regulations of Covid-19, no social distance.
  4. No monthly food parcels for caregivers who cannot go home and leave them behind.
  5. The limited structure needs to be extended to accommodate the increasing number of children. So, finding a site for the children is a challenge.
  6. A limited stipend of R2100 per month should be increased as well as other staff members from the manager, social worker, and others.

 List of our needs:

  • Urgent need for food and nappies
  • We need a new site so that we can accommodate the 36 children and hopefully more.
  • Financial assistance with installations for the new structure.
  • Clothing and blankets
  • Sponsorship of caregivers salary from the manager to the general staff
  • Monthly fuel cost for transportation.
  • Stimulation equipment in the form of yoga mats, trojan balls, training body balls,  cabinets for storing equipment.
  • Kitchen utensils

The 36 children are currently housed in 4 RDP houses which are overcrowded and surrounded by local shebeens. Traffic is an issue when the children are outside playing. We desperately need a safe building in which to house these vulnerable children.
