SANCCOB Eastern Cape

SANCCOB - Southern African National Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds

SANCCOB is a non-profit organization (and a registered PBO) whose primary objective is to reverse the decline of seabird populations through the rescue, rehabilitation, and release of ill, injured, abandoned, and oiled seabirds – especially endangered seabirds like the African penguin. Rapidly diminishing fish stocks, habitat destruction, climate change, and marine pollution are threatening the survival of the African penguin.

Our current projects include :

Penguin Adoption: A person can adopt and name a wild penguin for R600 or choose one of our home pen birds that live permanently at SANCCOB because they cannot survive in the wild R1000.

How  Covid-19 has affected our organization

SANCCOB relies on the funding received from visitor entry fees and with fewer visitors due to the various levels of lockdown since March 2020, we have been significantly affected.

  • Our overseas volunteer programme was badly affected by travel restrictions.
  • General economic downturn due to Covid has also affected how much disposable income people have to spend on visiting our Centre / and or purchasing from our shop.
  • Most of our funding comes from Zoos and Aquaria overseas and they have also had their doors closed due to Covid, reducing the amount they can contribute to SANCCOB in the current financial year.
