Retina South Africa is the only patient-run organisation focused on bringing cures and treatments for retinal blindness to all visually impaired South Africans through scientific research.
We empower people with visual impairments to be productive members of society through information-sharing, education, training, counselling and support services. We educate and raise awareness of inherited retinal disorders such as retinitis Pigmentosa (RP), and macular degeneration (MD) to name a few. We are also very focused on educating people on the dangers of diabetes and the vision loss associated with this devastating disease.
We have social workers, orientation & mobility instructors and peer counsellors who work in the community and provide an array of services and education to patients across the country, including those in rural areas, and both private and state medical facilities.
Our education and advocacy services are centred around raising awareness of vision loss, promoting good eye health and advocating for patients’ rights with governmental bodies, medical aid schemes and other role-players.
All of the above is made possible through various fundraising initiatives
