In April 2017, Shérie “Palesa” de Wet read an article about girls missing school due to a lack of sanitary pads.
The reality was horrifying and she started to think about all the other women in the world who also can’t afford sanitary pads and how they get through the month. Having been privileged enough to have had sanitary pads every month, Sherie decided that every girl deserves at least the same advantage.
She set out to find a sustainable solution, and after six months of research and testing, she launched version 12 of Palesa Reusable Sanitary Pads.
The Palesa Pads Foundation is on a mission to put an end to period poverty in South Africa and beyond through the manufacture and distribution of high-quality reusable sanitary pads that can be washed and used again each month for up to 5 years resulting in an 80% saving on the cost of sanitary products.
Through the Palesa Pads Foundation NPC we partner with corporate sponsors, individuals, and non-profit organizations to provide FREE reusable sanitary pads to disadvantaged schoolgirls.
In a country plagued by unemployment, millions of girls do not have access to quality sanitary pads and as a result, miss 3 to 5 days of school a month, which is almost 25% of their entire school year. This makes it exceptionally difficult for the girls to keep up with their school work and results in many of them falling behind and ultimately dropping out of school altogether. Without critical education opportunities, it becomes virtually impossible for these young girls to break the poverty cycle that they so often find themselves in.
The Palesa Pads Foundation is working hard to change this. The Foundation works with sponsors to donate washable, reusable sanitary pads to girls in need. To date, with the help of its generous corporate sponsors, Palesa Pads has helped keep over 114 000 girls in school by gifting them with these life-changing pads.
Our current projects include :
We are on a drive to supply as many South African girls as possible with their own set of reusable pads to ensure that they can get through the next 5 years, and are given the best possible chance of completing their education.
We would like to have reached the milestone of helping 200,000 girls in South Africa this year.
A list of our needs
Palesa Pads requires donations in order to reach the most remote areas of our country. Over the years we have been supported by individuals, corporates, and non-profit organisations, as well as crowdfunding campaigns. Donations made to the Palesa Pads Foundation are eligible for a Section 18A Tax Certificate so that they can be claimed back in your annual tax return.
