Nkosinathi Foundation is an NGO that provides life changing rehabilitation and independence skill training services to blind and partially sighted adults and children in Port Elizabeth and its surrounding rural areas. Our organisation celebrated its 70th birthday this year.
Project 1:
Urban & Rural Rehabilitation
Providing skills training such as Orientation and Mobility(independent travel), Adapted Skills of Daily Living(such as money and clothing identification), reading and writing of braille, as well as counselling support for both the visually impaired client and their family, Low Vision services and a internet café.
Project 2:
Employment and Tertiary Education Readiness Programme (ER)
This is a 10 month course where the trainees are taught basic computer skills(Microsoft suite and the internet) with assistive software, as well as job related skills such as interview and CV writing skills.
This programme also includes practical work experience.
Project 3:
Children's Development Programme
Some of the services we provide visually impaired children as well as their caregivers is assistance with providing stimulation and introduction to Adapted Daily Living skills, assistance with school applications.
We also have the first pre-school group for VI children & multi disabled children in Port Elizabeth.
List of Needs:
- Long White Canes (adults & children)
- Handrail outside of building to assist visually impaired clients.
-Assistance with maintenance around the NF building.
-Rain jackets for our fieldworkers.
-Work experience opportunities for our ER trainees.
-Building, tactile and sensory materials to build an accessible playground for pre-school group.
