Nkosinathi Foundation is a non-profit, non-government organisation that provides rehabilitation, skill development and education support services to blind and partially sighted adults and children and their families living in the Nelson Mandela Metropol and the surrounding areas. And we have been doing this for over 75 years.
In order to break the barriers of blindness experienced by people with a visual impairment, we place high importance on early intervention and we do this through our comprehensive children’s programme and the Bona uBuntu programme, that we run in partnership with Royal Dutch Visio.
The Bona uBuntu programme focuses on children aged 0-9 years old and their caregivers living in the Eastern Cape.
The programme focuses on :
- Early detection of visual impairments in children, and possible prevention of further loss of vision
- Access to proper low vision assessments
These could lead to children:
And most importantly that this leads to visually impaired children feeling confident and able to lead lives of independence and dignity

Eye Care Awareness Month is commemorated from 23 September to 20 October to raise awareness about the importance of eye health, specifically around the prevention and treatment of avoidable blindness. Many people may not know this but 75% of blindness is avoidable either through prevention or through treatment – which is why is important to make your vision a priority and to get your eyes tested regularly. To play our part in this initiative we have developed awareness materials focusing on children’s eye health and tips, and we are working with the local PE hospitals and clinics to have them displayed there. We’ve also created informative content around albinism, warning signs for possible vision problems and much more, which we will be posting on our Facebook page over the next 4 weeks, so please go and follow our page. As an NGO there are many ways that people can assist, - Financial contributions or donation are always needed. Donations would go towards sustaining and growing the programmes that we offer, purchasing and making specialised toys and equipment for children and adults. - Running office maintenance list, that professionals can assist us with. - Quite a big one, we are looking to partner/work with professionals in the eye care field that are willing to be stakeholders in the Bona uBuntu programme, this can encompass things such as: |
