Masibumbane Development Organisation

MDO is a fully registered non–profit and public benefit organization that was established in 2010 and is based in East London, Eastern Cape. Our mission is to empower underserviced and disadvantaged communities to realize their fundamental human rights in a democratic South Africa. We work in partnership with other organizations to facilitate and involve communities in mobilizing resources and designing programmes that address local health, education, and social development needs; our work is grounded in a commitment to self-advocacy and social justice.

Our Vision

We strive towards a society seen through a child’s eyes, where communities are empowered, prosperous, healthy, informed, and critically thoughtful and are growing with vitality and sustainability.

Some of our projects include Bumb'INGOMSO Psychosocial Support Intervention.

The project aims to curb the first-year student dropout rate and contribute towards the retention as well as throughout of the first-year students at Buffalo City and Lovedale Colleges The target population is young women aged between 15 and 29 years residing in Buffalo City Municipality, South Africa. The project objectives are: Establish mechanisms that support students coping skills, resilience, and ability to navigate effectively through the TVET system. Enhance academic performance, by creating mechanisms that immediately identify if students are falling behind and coach them on how to address the gaps in their learning. Establish a peer support programme that creates a sense of community, which will support students and maximize their chances of obtaining their qualifications.

The Open Books Open Miinds Project :

The objective of this project is to address the lack of books by establishing teacher resource libraries and the provision of books and dictionaries, through capacity building targeted at teachers, improving literacy, teaching, and instruction, and promoting literacy through creative events and competitions.

As part of the project implementation, teacher resource libraries were installed as part of resourcing of the schools. At baseline, none of the schools had any teacher resource library. Teacher resource libraries are important as teachers can use them to pull out teaching aids and books for lesson planning and learning.

A total of 5 637 books were purchased for Teacher Resource Library. The setting up of teacher resource libraries was done by a qualified librarian. 273 teachers were trained on the use of the Resource Library.

Open Books Open Mind is a Literacy Programme aimed at improving the levels of literacy by fostering reading and writing through the use of an experienced coach to improve the capacity of teachers in the Foundation and Intermediate Phases.
