Brief description of our organisation:
Izizwe Projects is a non-profit organisation started in 2008 to address the needs of the community of Gqebera/Walmer Township. Our focus is on community development by running a variety of programmes aimed at different age groups and sectors of the Walmer township community, from the littlest kids in the creches to pensioners who did not have the opportunity before to learn to read and write. The programmes are facilitated by a group of passionate and enthusiastic people comprising local coordinators sourced from within the community itself and foreign volunteers, provided by Khaya Volunteer Projects. Local volunteers are also more than welcome to join in the fun and hard work!
The Programs we are currently running:
At Izizwe Projects we are working on several programs. They will be listed below:
Our three top programs are:
Crèche literacy
This program is focusing on teaching the children, aged 3-6, the basics of English including the alphabet, colours, shapes, numbers and animals by doing certain games, singing and discussing about it.
Sport program
During the sport classes the children of the two primary schools in Walmer (Walmer Primary and John Masiza) get to experience and practice different types of sport like: hockey, soccer, rugby, American football, cricket, gymnastics and athletics.
Holiday program
During every school holiday, Izizwe Projects provides the children of the township with a fun program filled with activities such as sports, dance, arts and crafts, music and laughter as well as offering the children a lunch and a cool drink.
Our Organisation's Needs :

1.
Izizwe Project has been running for 10 years and throughout this time we have been able to create a good relationship with the community. We have been running Holiday Programs in the township that serves as a safe intervention; activities full of fun, sport and creativity during the school holidays. e.g last year December we hosted a holiday programme for 300 children, on average per day, and this ran for 2 weeks. The children had a lot of fun and were safe during this time.
2.
Izizwe Projects is working in the disadvantaged creches in the township by bringing programs like Oral Health and English literacy. Through the involvement of our volunteers both international and local, we were able to introduce English lessons to the children from the age of 3 years. This enables them to be able to communicate in English and prepare them for “big school”. We believe this is good for the children as it can unluck many doors to a bright future.
3.
Izizwe projects is also doing swimming lessons for the creches in the township. This activity is fun but also is essential as there are many children who drown during festive season due to the inability to swim. So by running this program, we believe that we are saving lives.
Number of participants
The toothbrush program is for 275 children in total.
Dance classes are given to around 30/35 children.
Crèche literacy is given to a total of 190 children.
Sport classes are given at 2 primary schools to many classes and children.
At the aftercare homework club there are an average of 10 children attending weekly.
There are two adult literacy classes, of which there are in total 20 adults.
On average there are 260 children present daily during the holiday programs.
With regards to basketball, there are two groups: primary school and high school. The primary school group includes 10-15 children where the high school group exists of 10 boys.
With the swimming lessons the number of children changes as we run an 8 week programme with one group at a time from various creches. Currently there are 8 participants, but with the previous group there were 12.
