Hobbiton is a register NPO & PBO that has been providing outdoor education for the last 73 years. Our mission is to promote environmental and social awareness, cross-cultural appreciation and the development of life skills through our facilities and the natural setting of our centres in order to assist disadvantaged youth. These life skills e.g. team building, personal development are becoming scarce due to the changes in the family unit and are essential to a healthy society.
Our top 3 projects:
Full Week Under Privileged Children's Camp which are held in the beautiful Hogsback mountains with 120 children between the ages of 10 - 14 selected from Places of Safety and Children's Homes. The children partake in various outdoor educational activities through which life skills are taught.
Weekend Under Privileged Camps are held at our Grahamstown centre for children 15 - 18 years old. We focus on the outdoor educational activities and the life skills already taught at previous camps and build on these with skills e.g. cooking, vehicle maintenance, welding, plumbing, etc.
Middle Ropes Course which will assist with teaching the children to understand the importance of teamwork.
A list of our needs: Food, blankets, mattresses, toiletries, building maintenance materials e.g. paint and money.
We have been providing learning experiences to children of the Eastern Cape for 73 years. We have over 7 000 children attending camps yearly.
It is always rewarding seeing the growth within the children during the camps and having the possibility to add to this development in a child’s life camp after camp as many of these children return to learn more is a blessing.
