Food Forward SA

As winter approaches, and as food insecurity drastically increases because many have lost their income, Food Forward SA is preparing to reach millions of vulnerable people across South Africa, so that they receive much-needed nutritious meals to stave off hunger.

The COVID-19 impact on our economy and food insecurity will be with us for at least 18 – 24 months. With this in mind, FoodForward SA is taking a two-year view to make sure that we create better access to healthy food for more than 750,000 people directly (and 2 million indirectly) through a network of 1,500 registered beneficiary organisations working in vulnerable communities across South Africa, including our most rural communities.

We need your help! To ensure that we can continue to support our expansion, we need a further R43mn over the two-year period. Your partnership will help us reach this goal so that we can address the problem of hunger at scale.

WHAT WE DO: One-third of all the food produced in South Africa is wasted, while more than 30 million people are food insecure or at risk of food insecurity, because of poor access to safe and nutritious food for the poor. Established in 2009 to address widespread hunger in South Africa, FoodForward SA connects a world of excess to a world of need by recovering quality edible surplus food from farmers, retailers, and manufacturers, for redistribution to beneficiary organisations that serve the poor. We call this model Foodbanking. https://youtu.be/AJ3iwlZ8UO0

    Warehouse Foodbanking

We source, collect, store edible surplus food from the supply chain and redistribute this food to registered Beneficiary Organisations (BOs) across South Africa that use the groceries to prepare meals.

     FoodShare / Virtual Foodbanking

We developed our own digital technology platform called FoodShare that virtually connects beneficiary organisations to retail stores and food outlets for the regular collection and reporting of surplus food.

     Second Harvest

Second Harvest is our outreach programme to commercial farmers, allowing them to donate their post-harvest surplus produce to fight hunger. Second Harvest has drastically improved the nutritional value of the food we recover. Where huge volumes are donated, we partner with manufacturers to produce shelf-stable products like jams and sauces.

    Mobile Rural Depots

In order to ensure greater access to food to vulnerable rural communities, FoodForward SA set up the Mobile Rural Depot (MRD) model. We select vulnerable rural communities across South Africa, and we provide beneficiary organisations with monthly food provisions.

     Supply Chain Youth Internship

The supply chain is a huge barrier to entry for underprivileged youth. In an effort to reduce youth unemployment and equip them with skills and experience, we started a SETA accredited 6-month Supply Chain Youth Internship, and aim to get them absorbed by one of our supply chain partners.

    Large-scale Feeding Programmes

In partnership with various corporates, we provide nutritious breakfast cereals and milk to 50,000 children in crèches, as well as primary and secondary schools every school day

Our primary need is for funding.
