Exctinction Rebellion South Africa

The science is clear: we are facing an unprecedented climate and ecological emergency. South Africa is extremely vulnerable to the effects of climate breakdown, yet our national elections proceeded with barely a mention of it. Extinction Rebellion is an international apolitical network using non-violent direct action to persuade governments to act, and the time to act is now.

OUR GOALS ARE :

To spark and sustain a rebellion that will compel both the government and the public to take the urgent action required to halt biodiversity loss and ecosystem collapse, and to begin the much-needed process of systematically transforming our economy and society in order to bring about a just and sustainable future for all.

OUR CURRENT PROJECT :

At the moment we are doing research on the water situation here in Gqeberha, thinking specifically to the question of the drought and water access. We are also part of a few coalitions that are paying attention to the ocean, which would involve the anti-Shell, bunkering, and seismic surveying campaigns.

 Our Demands:

  1. Tell the truth

Government must tell the truth by declaring a climate and ecological emergency, working with other institutions to communicate the urgency for change.

  1. Act Now

Government must act now to halt biodiversity loss and reduce greenhouse gas emissions to net-zero by 2025.

  1. Beyond Politics

Government must create and be led by the decisions of a Citizens’ Assembly on climate and ecological justice.

  1. We have a shared vision of change

Creating a world that is fit for generations to come.

  1. We set our mission on what is necessary

Mobilizing 3.5% of the population to achieve system change – using ideas such as “Momentum-driven organizing” to achieve this.

  1. We need a regenerative culture

Creating a culture that is healthy, resilient, and adaptable.

  1. We openly challenge ourselves and this toxic system

Leaving our comfort zones to take action for change.

  1. We value reflection and learning

Following a cycle of action, reflection, learning, and planning for more action. Learning from other movements and contexts as well as our own experiences.

  1. We welcome everyone and every part of everyone

Working actively to create safer and more accessible spaces.

  1. We actively mitigate for power

Breaking down hierarchies of power for more equitable participation.

  1. We avoid blaming and shaming

We live in a toxic system, but no one individual is to blame.

  1. We are a non-violent network

Using non-violent strategy and tactics is the most effective way to bring about change.

  1. We are based on autonomy and decentralization

We collectively create the structures we need to challenge power. Anyone who follows these core principles and values can take action in the name of Extinction Rebellion.

Overwhelming scientific consensus indicates that we only have until 2030 to decarbonize our economies to avert the threat of drought, wildfire, floods, disease, food insecurity, and total economic collapse.
