Domestic Animal Care

The late Ellen Dunning was the founder of Domestic Animal Care, an NPO that has been serving underprivileged animals around Port Elizabeth for the past 35 years.

The four legs of Domestic Animal Care:

Leg 1 - FEEDING PROGRAM: At least 300 dogs and cats are fed per week. Fed animals are less likely to roam and create further problems. Packs of hungry dogs roaming the streets are not only dangerous but is simply inhumane, cruel, and unnecessary. This leg is the first vital step to changing the lives of the animals and their owners we get into contact with.

Leg 2 - EDUCATION: Filling the need to educate owners of domestic animals in the proper care, love, and respect for their pets. Whilst we spend time with the adults our real target is their children. If they are taught to cherish and respect their animals, it will carry over into their daily lives. Not only do they learn to respect their pets, but also to respect themselves and others and be more open to assisting persons and animals less fortunate. This helps to build their community into a better place for them to live in. This is a long but vital process.

Leg 3 - TREATMENT OF ANIMALS: Treating as many as possible ill, injured or infected animals as finances will allow. This, too, is an important service to the community and it goes without saying that it is of huge importance to the animals!!

Leg 4 - STERILISATION PROGRAM: Sterilising the animals stops unnecessary, cruel, and uncontrolled breeding and provides them with a better quality of life. The sterilization program also assists in the combat of disease, especially sexually transmitted diseases as well as the transfer of mange (from mothers to babies). This program is another very important service we deliver to the community.

We are currently one of the beneficiaries of the following incredible project...Please consider supporting it!

This Mandela month Lee Rescue is aiming to raise enough money to sterilize 67 dogs - BUT - we are hoping to raise enough money to do way more than that - we will continue with this drive for the month of July and hopefully go way beyond that target! There is such a great need for this in our metro. Let's be Spay-Tacular together! Domestic Animal Care is one of the worthy beneficiaries!

PLEASE consider making a donation - no amount is too big or too small... banking details on the poster!

CORPORATES- we would love you to support this worthy cause too. The shelters are overflowing – let’s do it - let’s make a difference together this Mandela month.
