CHOC - Childhood Cancer Foundation

We are an NGO supporting children with cancer and their families from diagnosis onwards. We offer the support of a Social Worker to support the medical staff and assist the families, assist with transport funds to get to the treatment centre and back home, assist with bereavement costs, run a mom’s skills programme and a CHOC Interactive Play and Skills programme for the children in the ward. There are two CHOC homes in the Eastern Cape; one in Buffalo City and one in Gqeberha.

Our Top 3 projects are :

2 CHOC Houses which supply accommodation and meals at no charge for out-of-town families when they bring their children to the unit for treatment.
CHOC Interactive Play and Skills programme which is run 3 x a week by a CHOC-paid teacher, to ensure that some form of education continues.
CHOC Awareness programmes and road shows inform the community of the importance of identifying the early warning signs of childhood cancer which results in early detection

The best estimates are that 1 in 408 children is diagnosed with cancer in South Africa each year. However, based on the rates that are experienced in other countries, it is believed that this is only half the number of children who have cancer; the rest are never diagnosed and thus receive no treatment.
