Cerebral Palsy Eastern Cape

Our Vision is to be the most effective provider of specialised services to individuals with cerebral palsy. Our mission is to encourage, love and care for all persons showing signs primarily of cerebral palsy and specific learning disabilities in the Eastern Cape, and other persons with similar special needs or conditions, bringing them to a full knowledge of self-worth, helping to attain their maximum potential, that they may independently integrate into the community.

Current Projects :

All our therapeutic services are packaged in our Hambisela programme, which has four different focus areas.

Hambisela-Usana:  An early identification and intervention project (for babies at risk of cerebral palsy) run at Dora Nginza Hospital.

Hambisela Care Centres:  Uplifting and supporting community care centres for children with disabilities.

Hambisela Pro:  Training for health care professionals in the management and treatment of cerebral palsy.

Hambisela Research:  We are completing our first research project on the efficacy of parent training as a treatment method for children with cerebral palsy, and we are planning our second project.

A list of our needs:

Financial assistance – once-off and regular donations.  We are completely dependent on donations and grants as we get no government assistance.

Bus – 30 seater which is wheelchair friendly.  We transport children from Uitenhage to Cape Recife School on a daily basis, and our current bus needs replacing.

A success story :

Our association developed the “Hambisela – Getting to know CP” parent training program, the purpose of which is to empower parents with the knowledge and skills to look after their children with cerebral palsy in a therapeutic way.  This program is being used internationally and has been translated into many different languages.

Our recent research project yielded some positive results on the effect of the parent training program on the parents and their knowledge and insight into their children’s condition.  A few of the quotes from our groups include:

“I feel better, I feel free now.  Because I learnt a lot about her.  I’m free!”

“I learnt a lot of things that I had to apply to my daughter, and she later on improved by doing new things that she was unable to do before. I would like to thank the programme by teaching me things I didn’t know before that would help me when I’m in a certain situation with her.”

“I’m not getting tired now, fed up with her because I learnt many things in this class.”
