The Carel du Toit Centre in East London assists pre-school deaf children in the Eastern Cape with the natural acquisition of language and speech through the use of technology so that they can speak and participate in the hearing world.
Our vision is to see that children diagnosed with deafness in this region receive the help they need to grow and flourish as individuals, eventually reaching their full potential as adults.
Our current projects:
A list of our needs: Gardening tools – fork/small hand spade/small hand fork/hose pipe and fittings,
White A4 paper, colored paper and card A4 laminating machine, stickers, Bostik glues
Security Camera and monitor
Sand for sandpit
The impact Covid-19 has had on our organization
Covid-19 has brought many challenges to our organization. For each individual child and his/her family, there is a story. Some parents have become unemployed or have had salary cuts and this has placed an extra burden on their already extensive financial needs. With hearing equipment, there is always a need for maintenance and repairs. A cochlear implant part, for example, can cost up to R 3 000 to replace. Without this part, a child does not have access to hearing. Our school has had to find money to become Covid-19 compliant and we have the ongoing cost of PPE, sanitizer, paper towel,s etc.
