C.A.T Garden Route (Cat Assistance Team) has no paid staff or premises. We are volunteers, using our own vehicles and time. Our goal is to sterilise as many cats as possible and prevent unnecessary suffering.
Cruelty, neglect, starvation, disease and breeding are reduced by sterilisation.
Come rain or shine, every day we look for marginalised cats in our community, farms and businesses, and industrial and refuse areas. We are the only cat-specified NPO in our area.
Sterilisation is our biggest cost. Each one costs in the region of ZAR 600 (equivalent to approximately $30/€30 as of February 2024). This includes the surgery itself, testing for disease, parasite control, and transporting cats to and from vets.
The fact that we can offer sterilisation at no charge to the owner is a key factor in our success rate.
WE TAKE CARE OF :
Farm cats provide eco-friendly pest control for the many farms in the region. We sterilise them to ensure their numbers are manageable. This also ensures that they do not cross-breed with African Wild Cats, who are an endangered species.
Feral cats live in our business, industrial and refuse areas. We sterilise them to ensure their numbers are manageable, they remain healthy, and they continue to provide eco-friendly pest control. We supplement their food but ensure they are not reliant on us.
And URBAN CATS
Many people in our marginalised communities cannot afford to care for the animals who share their space. Cats are often loosely owned; and regarded as pest controllers at best and vermin at worst. Reducing the number of unwanted animals is the only solution to preventing their deprivation and suffering.

Donations of food, or contributions to the cost of food, are very welcome. Food we provide to feral cat colonies, or to urban cats that we have sterilised, is purely supplementary. We ensure no cat is reliant on us as its sole source of food, and are firmly against feeding feral colonies that are not actively managed by trap-neuter-return.
You can help by donating: money, cat food, parasite control or equipment - we appreciate all contributions, big or small!
