Ban on cattle movement under review

File

The minister of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development, Thoko Didiza has provided an update following the first week of the countrywide ban on the movement of cattle because of Foot and Mouth Disease.

She says during the week of 18 to 25 August, 11 new outbreaks of FMD brought the total number of infected properties in the country to 127.

Five new cases have been confirmed in KZN, five in the Free State and one in Gauteng.

The Department says it regrets the economic impact on farming enterprises.

It says the medium to long-term impact on the livestock industry was at the center of the decision to implement the ban.

It will remain in place until the status of the outbreak is considered again at the end of week two.

The Department is also looking at lifting the ban on those provinces that have no cases of foot and mouth, including the Eastern Cape, in the coming week.
