Two competitors die after Ironman swim

Port Elizabeth police have confirmed that two competitors who took part in the 2019 Standard Bank Ironman Championships on Sunday have died after competing in the swim event.

A police spokesperson said that one man was from George (63) and the other from Durban (58).

They experienced difficulties and were rushed to hospital where they died.

In a brief statement Ironman South Africa said that “it is with great sadness that we confirm the death of two race participants at the IRONMAN African Championship.”

"Both athletes required medical attention during the swim portion of Sunday's race and were transported to a nearby hospital where they were treated."

“Our condolences go out to the family and friends of both athletes, whom we will continue to support,” the statement said.

“We are working with the local authorities to gather all details and will continue to do everything possible to provide a safe environment for our athletes,” Ironman SA said.

Police have opened inquest dockets.
