Two people were killed in a freak accident in Walmer Township in Port Elizabeth on Friday.
Police said a man and woman, who were sleeping in a garage attached to a house in Bhabhatane Street, were killed when a car crashed into the building at around 6.30am.
Police spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu, said a man aged 30 and a woman in her twenties, died on the scene. She said the driver of the white vehicle was removed from the scene by police as the community were angered by the incident.
Naidu said police will open a culpable homicide docket.
Meanwhile, two more people have died on Eastern Cape roads in the past 24 hours..
Provincial traffic spokesperson, Charles Bramwell, said the driver of a vehicle was killed on Friday morning when he apparently swerved to avoid a person lying in the road.
He said the incident happened at around 4am in Baviaanskloof.
Three passengers were lightly injured.
Bramwell also said that a person who had been given a lift by a motorist was killed when the vehicle overturned on the R58 between Ventersdopr and Burgersdorp on Thursday afternoon.
Three other people were seriously injured and taken to hospital.
The Road Traffic Management Corporation has meanwhile warned motorists that there would be an intensified law-enforcement over Christmas long weekend to reduce risks of crashes and fatalities.
More that 5 500 motorists had been reported so far for drunken driving, speeding, reckless and negligent driving, among others.
The highest number (3700) of motorists were found to driving while under the influence of alcohol.
RTMC spokesperson, Simon Zwane, said that "traffic out of the big cities to the coastal regions and the north started building up this morning (Friday)."
"The roads are expected to remain busy the whole day," he said.
