Patient with swine flu transferred from PE-JHB

Netcare Greenacres Hospital in Port Elizabeth has confirmed that a patient presenting with the H1-N1, commonly known as swine flu, has been transferred to a Johannesburg Hospital.

However, no further details about the patient are available as yet.

The Herald reported on its Facebook page that the National Institute for Communicable Diseases had confirmed 24 cases country-wide, with three in the Eastern Cape. And, according to Netcare's medical director, Dr Anchen Laubscher, the H1-N1 virus, which resulted in a pandemic in 2009 and 2010, has nowadays become just one of the worldwide seasonal influenza virus strains which is seen occasionally throughout winter.

She says in order to reduce the risk of infection it's important to follow good personal hygiene.Dr Laubscher recommends that patients see their family doctor as soon as they start to experience symptoms such as an aching body, shivering and fever, sore throat, a headache and watery, red eyes.
